Small Scale Forged Earrings

June 6 - 8, 2025

Learn to forge metal at the jewelry scale. Through practice, students will learn how metal behaves so they can work with it to create simple and complex forms. Develop hammer skills to shape and texture metal while creating earrings in brass, copper, and sterling silver. Working with a jeweler’s saw, files, pliers, and more students will learn how to make their own ear wires to create hoop, post, or dangle earrings. Students can expect to make several pairs of earrings over the course of the workshop. We’ll explore different cold connections, earring styles, and finishes, while focusing on the basic hammer techniques that allow us to stretch, bend, and form metal to make unique jewelry.

Best for beginners.

Small Containers / Baby Boxes

September 5 - 7, 2025

Tiny treasures need tiny treasure chests. By the end of this course each participant will take home a closable container as well as some fun functional samples to fuel their creativity. Through demonstrations and sample making you will learn the joys and challenges of fabricating functional mechanisms. We will be working at a small scale; think matchbook, salt shaker, hedgehog’s briefcase. We will cover multiple methods for hinge fabrication and different closure mechanisms (friction fit, clasp, hook…). Participants should have a basic metalsmithing skill set including sawing and soldering. Those with more developed fabrication skills will be able to create more samples and try out more of the techniques demonstrated but everyone will leave with a baby box and a strong understanding of hinge and container making.
